Golf anyone?

This Thursday I'll get the privilege of playing golf with three friends that I've known for more than 10 years. Unfortunately these days I only get to play on average once (maybe twice) per year. The first 9 holes are usually spent pulling cobwebs off my clubs and trying to remember the 45 critical things that I need to remember to do before swinging, when I'm swinging and after I've sliced the ball onto the other fairway. The next 9 holes are generally spent thanking God that it's a super ball tournament and that I don't have to play my own ball. That will make sense to those of you who play golf. None the less, there always seems to be at least one shot (in my case not many more than that) which make you realize that there is some enjoyment in the game and cause you to want to play again. Each time I finish playing I vow to play again within the next month, but in reality it never happens. This year, I'm going to resist the urge to make that vow.

I believe that as much as we try to "do everything" that it's just not humanly possible for us to do it all and do anything well. Golf is an excellent example of that in my life. I could probably become a better golfer (wouldn't take much), but at what cost? Time away from my family on Saturday mornings? Days off work to play in the afternoon (maybe someday when we're not growing so quickly)?

Pick the goals that you're shooting for prayerfully and carefully. Time with your family, success at work, giving to your community, excelling at a competitive sport, getting your degree, etc., etc. Do the things that will help you achieve them. Let the activities and interests that won't help you achieve them take a back seat!
