Pumpkin Carving

I just finished taking my two oldest girls to the first annual WingSwept pumpkin carving event.  We had about 20 in all show up for the event and carve some really impressive designs.  We managed to break a few knives and crarving tools in the process too!

How vs. Why

I had the chance to meet with a local Garner business owner this past week.  In the course of our discussions about many things he shared with me a quote that is father told him early in life.  “Those who know HOW will always have a job.  Those who know WHY will always be the boss”.

The difference between trying and doing!

I was recently in a meeting where I listened to one of the participants state that they would “try” to get something done within a specified period of time.  Another member challenged that to say, do you intend to do it or not?  If you do then don’t say “try” just say you’re going to “do” it and let that be your word.  At first I considered it to just be a difference of opinions about the wording of a statement.  In several conversations since that time though I’ve caught myself using the phrase “I’ll try to…..<whatever>” and realized that when I really intended to get something done I didn’t use the word try, but rather said that I would “do” whatever the task was at hand.  Consider that next time you tell someone that you’re going to “try” to do something.

Packages for Patriots

Earlier today I was able to take my four year old daughter and join several of the WingSwept team to help volunteer for a local service project called “Packages for Patriots”.  As the name would imply we were assembling care packages for troops overseas.  This was put together originally by a local businessman, Ralph Smith of Cottman Transmission, whose son is in the Army and has served in combat in Iraq.  The volunteers were thankfully out in force this morning so it only took about an hour to assemble all of the boxes.  Our limitation was the supplies available with the monies donated to date.  This is not a good year for charities like Packages for Patriots with the economic conditions.  My hope is that someone reading this will realize that this is a good cause and that our soliders still need support despite the economy and will feel led to contribute.  If you would like to contribute please contact me for more details at 919.600.5114 or read the letter written by Ralph Smith.

Burning bridges

I think most people would agree that burning bridges is not in their best interest.  I would like to say that I’ve never burned a bridge (I’ve burned a few regrettably), but I do try hard to avoid doing so.  This past week I witnessed someone absolutely positively TORCH a bridge in a manner that I’ve never seen before (and hope to never again).  At WingSwept we have a very rigorous interview process designed to make sure that we get the “right people in the right seat” on the bus.  One potential candidate made it through all of the steps of the interview process only to be eliminated in his final interview.  We notified the candidate of the decision letting him know that we did not believe he would be a good fit for the position.  The conversation ended well and normally that would be the end of the dialog.  Shortly thereafter the candidate called one of our folks and left a voicemail that was “less than professional”.  Later the same day the candidate also reached out to one of our employee’s family members who was also considering him for a position.  In that thread of emails the candidate made personal insults to both of family members that were completely unwarranted.

While its unfortunate that the situation ended this way it does prove that we made the “right decision” in not hiring the candidate.  It should also make the top ten list of things NOT to do when being told that you’re not getting a job.

Are you in your right mind?

It’s been said that only a lefthander is in their right might (speaking about the side of the brain we use most commonly).  As a life long lefthander I’m used to things that are just a little bit different or a little more cumbersome (like writing in a spiral notebook — of course some just turn them upside down — problem solved).  Today is International Lefthander’s day to acknowledge the special needs and frustrations the world over.  Of course you couldn’t have a day without noting some famous lefthanders:  http://www.wikinfo.org/index.php/List_of_famous_left-handed_people

WingSwept Migrates to Managed Services

While the purpose of this blog is not to plug WingSwept, it’s hard not to be proud of the company that you founded.  Having said that I’ll keep the editorial to a minimum.  Read more here:  http://nctechnews.com/?p=580
